Equipment protection
Protection of equipment against the environment, misuse and vandalism.
My work designing military equipment has given me the experience, and know-how, to provide protection to commercial and consumer products, such as medical, transport and industrial equipment; personal use and wearable products too. Examples are outdoors security cameras, EV chargers, hospital equipment, vehicle parts, pay points, cash dispensers, etc.
The main items of protection are:
-
Water ingress
-
Dust and smoke ingress
-
Shock
-
Vibration
-
Drop
-
High temperature
-
Low temperature
-
Altitude (pressure changes)
-
Temperature shock
-
Tamper
-
Theft
-
Vandalism
-
Abrasion
-
Chemical attack
-
Corrosion
-
EMI
-
Electrical shock
-
UV light degradation
Mostly, the equipment is electrical or electronic but it can also be purely mechanical.
One of the most common protection types is based on the IP rating for dust and water protection, such as:
-
IP60 - Dust tight
-
IP61 - Dripping water
-
IP62 - Dripping water when tilted < 15º
-
IP63 - Spraying water
-
IP64 - Splashing water
-
IP65 - Water jets
-
IP66 - Powerful water jets
-
IP67 - Immersion up to 1 m
-
IP68 - Immersion beyond 1 m
Here are examples of products I have worked on, which required special protection.
