This product is intended for small children aged 3 to 6 to learn the basics of chess. There has been substantial research carried out by the originator of the product idea, my client, who is a chess instructor to children in a chess club.

My work covered the steps from concept to manufacture:

- Concept ideas

- Market research

- CAD design development

- Prototyping

- Testing

- Design for manufacture

- Organising manufacture

- Liaison with manufacturers during the moulds construction

- Checking samples and implementing improvements

- Supervising the packaging design and manufacture

Chess instructional toy

There will be a board for each piece type: Rook, Bishop, Queen, King and Knight. The boards have a specific design for each piece type.

The pieces for each board type are brightly coloured in order to attract the interest of children.

The toy consists of a transparent cover, on the chequered board, which has channels that allow the pieces in question to move only in the direction and distance that the rules of chess allow.

CAD development

Early prototypes to test the design ideas for the mechanics of the product.

The boards can be turned upside down and there is a chess board printed which allows the children to play with standard chess pieces once they have learned the basics of their movement.

Trials in real life situations with children learning chess. The product is manufactured with quality and durable injection moulded ABS plastics so that it withstands constant use by children.
